Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory

Reasoning — how people solve problems and make business decisions.

25–30 minutes 24 problems Cognitive ability & decision making

Overview

The Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory (HBRI) describes reasoning style — the ability to evaluate sets of data, make decisions, solve problems, and avoid repeating past mistakes. It is the first measure of cognitive ability designed specifically to predict real-world business performance.

Rather than measuring abstract IQ, the HBRI evaluates how people identify problems, weigh solutions, and learn from experience — critical insight for roles that demand sound judgment and strategic decision making.

The 2 Reasoning Dimensions

Qualitative Reasoning

Working with verbal and visual data — evaluating arguments, detecting logic flaws, and drawing accurate conclusions from written and graphical information

Quantitative Reasoning

Working with numerical and symbolic data — solving mathematical problems, interpreting trends, and making data-driven decisions

When to Use the HBRI

  • Assessing decision-making style for executive roles
  • Screening for analytical and strategic-thinking capability
  • Complementing personality data with cognitive insight
  • Development planning for judgment and problem solving
